What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat the inside of a tooth when its pulp (the nerve inside the tooth) becomes infected or inflamed. This infection can be caused by deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or trauma. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the tooth’s interior, and sealing it to prevent future infection.

Why Might You Need a Root Canal?

A root canal may be necessary if you experience:

  • Severe Toothache: Persistent pain in the tooth, especially when eating or touching the affected area.

  • Prolonged Sensitivity: Extended sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that doesn’t subside.

  • Swelling and Tenderness: Swelling in the gums or tenderness around the affected tooth.

  • Darkened Tooth: Discolouration of the tooth, which may indicate internal damage.

  • Abscess Formation: Formation of a pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth, which can be a sign of infection.

What to Expect During a Root Canal Procedure

  1. Initial Evaluation: We’ll begin with a thorough examination and may take x-rays to assess the extent of the infection and the condition of the tooth’s roots.

  2. Anaesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we use heated local anaesthesia to numb the affected tooth and surrounding area. If you have concerns about anxiety, we can discuss sedation options to help you relax during the procedure.

  3. Cleaning and Disinfecting: Our dentist will create an access opening in the tooth to remove the infected pulp. The inside of the tooth will be cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria and debris.

  4. Filling and Sealing: Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, we fill the empty root canals with a biocompatible material to seal them and prevent future infection. The tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent restoration.

  5. Restoration: After the root canal, your tooth may need a crown or filling to restore its full function and protect it from further damage. We’ll discuss the best restoration options for your situation.

  6. Recovery and Aftercare: Recovery from a root canal is typically straightforward. You may experience some discomfort or mild swelling in the days following the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Follow our aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and maintain good oral hygiene to prevent future issues.
